Grant Proposal Project
Installation of Solar Panels on Irvin Young Auditorium
As part of the curriculum for my Technical Communications class this past semester at UW-Whitewater, we were required to prepare a grant proposal that would improve something here at UW-Whitewater. As strong supporters of the green initiatives at this university, my group and I decided that the transition to a more eco-friendly university would be the approach we would take. We explored our options and decided to propose the installation of Photovoltaic Solar Panels on the roof of the Irvin Young Auditorium on campus. Through an extensive research process including online research, interviews of subject matter experts, and surveys of UW-Whitewater students and faculty, we were able to compose a thorough proposal for the funding for this project, a very reasonable initiative for our campus. My group and I worked in conjunction with the Department of Facilities Planning & Management and the Department of Sustainability at UW-Whitewater to establish the feasibility of the project, while learning the best possible options for carrying out the project.
Upon completion of the written proposal, I have found the project to be extremely educational, as I not only learned an extensive amount about sustainability and solar panels as a "green" initiative, but my grant-writing abilities improved greatly. As I already loved to write before working with this project, I have now developed a strong desire to write grants and professional documents such as this, and I feel that I will be a strong asset to any company or agency that has a need for employing someone with such strong written communication skills and a desire to write. Below, I have attached the written proposal completed by my group and I, along with the presentation we presented to our Technical Communications class.
